PROGRAM.

Brief historical review of the building variables of plucked string instruments, analyzing the design and development of the most recognized models. Differences between repair and restore. Review and diagnostic instruments. Preparation of budgets. Range of classic techniques used in each type of repair, classic materials. Cracks, longitudinal to the grain, transverse breaks, holes, material addition. Large piece fractures. Reinforcements, their preparation and application. Glued and unglued parts. Modern techniques and new materials. Necessary tools (standard and built by each repairman). Decisions about finishing. Identification and corrections. Set-up and general cleaning. Re-fretting. Height compensation. Maintenance recommendations.

General information

Goals. The main objective is educational,  theoretical and practical knowledge is provided to develop basic skills in repair of electric (guitars and basses) and acoustic plucked string instruments (classical, flamenco, or steel string guitars, charangos, ronrocos, guitarrones, Venezuelan cuatros, Cuban tres and practically any chordophone of this type). The secondary is to guide each person in the experience of comprehensive repair of musical instruments in an artisanal way, achieving a high level of functional and aesthetic recovery.

Recipients. All those people over 18 years old who wish to learn guitar making and develop it professionally, as well as those musicians who wish to keep their instrument in optimal conditions. It is not necessary to have previous experience in the field or to have knowledge of music.

Course modality. This program can be chosen in regular classes, intensive classes or as individual classes.

The regular group classes, 2 hours and a half weekly, with a maximum of 8 students per course. Intensive and group course of 8 hours in one day. The individual classes are organized with each student (2 hours minimum/5 hours maximum).
Each student brings one or more instruments and practices with it, under the supervision of the teacher. If the student do not have a guitar, the school can provide it for practices. The pace of work in class, and the deepening of knowledge are defined by the teaching staff, according to the interests of each student.

We have a work space with all the appropriate comfort, lighting and safety conditions, in a workshop equipped with the necessary machines and tools to carry out the guitar buildings.

Schedule. Regular classes run from February to December. You can start at any time of the year, as long as there is vacancy available. Intensive courses are scheduled twice a year. The individual classes are agreed with each student.

Duración. El tipo de aprendizaje y los tiempos que este demande son individuales: el curso inicia cuando la persona comienza su primer proyecto y dependiendo de la búsqueda de cada cual, puede terminar con la finalización de ese propósito o continuar en el aprendizaje de la luthería y terminar cuando decida que está en condiciones de afrontar el oficio profesionalmente. Independientemente del tiempo que le demande a cada persona.
